The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 30 - June 1, 1983

Monday, May 30, 1983 RAIN

Just another rainy day as usual. It rained very hard at times too. Billie not very good today. He went back to bad and slept and when he got up he was more rested and a dite better. I ironed, done up the work, made brownies. Wrote to Esther. Betty and Walt left for Rhode Island about 2 o’clock. They will be back tomorrow night. Bill up to Dorothea’s today. She sold about $140 worth today, the first day she opened her shop. Six eggs, we have been getting six for the past four days.

Tuesday, May 31, 1983 RAIN

Again Rain. We are having the most miserable weather possible. Rain every day and night, the ground is covered with water, it stands on top of the ground. The rain stopped in middle of forenoon, no sun but it didn’t rain so that they can get outside. Billie took a walk down to Betty’s in PM. Heidi was so pleased.

Betty and Walt got home at about 11 o’clock tonight. I didn’t do much today, some figuring. I ironed. I didn’t wash because the ground is so full of water.

Wednesday, June 1, 1983 Sun today, we loved it

After the fog lifted we had a nice sunny day. I did a wash and then I went down to Betty’s to see the things Betty and Walt brought home from Walt’s Aunt Vi. Dorothea came down to see it. Bill and Carmen up to New Hampshire. It is going to cost too much to finish that porch. We loved the SUN.
