The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 4 - 7, 1983

Monday, April 4, 1983

A cloudy dreary day, not much rain, but no sun. I done regular work. The furnace on the bum, they had to come and fix it. I then did the washing. Also I went to town, got stamps, mailed Billie’s birth certificate. And mail that. And cashed check. I was busy all day, washed floors etc. Kim got another letter from a friend Roger Smith. Snow went a lot yesterday.

Fair, some clouds and some sun. I done all my work. Ironed, watched my shows than got ready to go to get the cheese and butter. It looks good to look out and see that late snow disappearing. Dorothea took me down to get the cheese and butter. Kim called after supper. She is pleased about going to that dance.

A nice day, mild. I got the work done up and went to Mountain Valley Mall shopping in PM. I got supper ready then got ready, watched first two soaps. Then they came, Betty, Dorothea and Kim. Went up to New Hampshire for Kim to get her prom dress. Also she got her slippers (dancing) and clutch purse to go with it. All she has got to get now is her slip. She looked so pretty in the dress. She is a nice-looking girl. We went up to show her where Fox Ridge is where the dance is to be. Dorothea did a dite of shopping. Betty and Kim did a lot. I did quite a bit too. Betty got Zak a new jacket and jogging suit. Walt gone to Rhode Island.
