The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 31 - April 3, 1983 Easter Sunday

Thursday, March 31, 1983 BILLIE TO PORTLAND

A nice day, mostly sunny. Milder temperatures. Many bare spots showing up in the field from the 8 inch snowstorm we got last Monday morning. I done up the work, watched the programs. Betty, Delores and I went to town to shop. I came home, got things put away, got lunch. I made a chiffon cake, a Jell-O salad and defrosted the refrigerator. Watched shows. Kim called after school and let me read her letter.

Friday, April 1, 1983 363+159 = 522

Light clouds all day, sun shown some. Quite mild. I been busy all day. I changed my bed, did a big wash, I washed my hair and put a rinse on it. I washed windows. Checks came today. I took a bath. Bill took me to town. Dorothea and David called for an hour or so. All I saw today on soaps was General Hospital. Kim went to work from 3:30 PM to 10 PM. Billie has been encouraged that he may get Social Security and SSI. Also a possibility Vets aid.

Saturday, April 2, 1983

Busy all day. I done up the housework, swept, dusted, washed floors, changed beds, cooked and 1 million other jobs. I went to town.

Sunday, April 3, 1983 Easter CARMEN CALLED

Apparently this was a new sweater.

A cloudy day. Got dinner. Kim came up and helped. The usual Easter dinner, ham, salad, greens (spinach), mashed potatoes and sweet potatoes. Hot cross buns and regular rolls. Lemon sponge pie and whipped cream cake. Betty’s family and Fern. Got a call from Carmen. She is inquiring about a job in Berwick Maine.
