The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 12 - 14, 1983 CARMEN GRADUATES COLLEGE

 

Thursday, May 12, 1983 PERMANENT, Jersey cow gone

 

Rainy in a.m., cleared and nice rest of the day. I got ready and went and got my perm. I came home, got dinner and did a dite of wash. Roger was supposed to leave today but it came 4 o’clock and he hadn’t got his money so he hadn’t left. Kim is quite upset because she was told by Walt he couldn’t stay there tonight.

 

 

 

Friday, May 13, 1983

 

A partly cloudy and sunny day. I made a (blank). I went down and got my hair set. I washed windows, made a cake. Billie in and out today. Bill worked on the porch. I did an ironing etc.

 

 

 

Saturday, May 14, 1983 sunny, BILLIE TO MM CENTER, CARMEN CHRISTIE HORTON GRADUATED FROM UM AT ORONO

 

Today Dorothea and I took Billie to the Maine Medical Center in Portland for a open heart surgery on Monday. Also today Carmen graduates from UM Orono and came home. Betty and Walt up to the graduation. Bill and Zak worked on the porch. Kim came up and got some pretty flowers, wild. Well it has been a very nice day. First one since over a month, all day of sun. It was so good. Carmen got a new car for her gift from her parents, a Ford Escort. Dorothea and David’s company came today. For gifts Carmen got a new car Ford Escort, $55 in money, a beautiful gift from Kim, a necklace from Zak.
