The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 18 - 21, 1983

Wednesday, May 18, 1983 Billie in a lot of pain today, DAVID’S COW HAS CALF, a quite nice sunny day

It has been sunny but on the cool side, a cool wind. David’s cow Rosie had a nice bull calf today. A big relief. Bill and Betty got the porch floored over today. Carmen let the horses down in the lower pasture. Dorothea, Kim and I went down to see Billie. He was in a lot of pain today, he felt quite sick. He had a slight fever and a little congestion in his lungs.

Thursday, May 19, 1983 Billie up today. Carmen has a job

Sunny in a.m. and most of PM. It got cloudy and hazy in PM. I did some odd jobs today. Carmen, Betty and Bill went to see Billie today. He was up and walked down to the lounge. He wasn’t in as much pain as yesterday. He was in misery. Today Carmen got a job down on 302 flagging traffic. She is very happy with her new car.

Friday, May 20, 1983 RAINED HARD

Another miserable rainy dark day. I did a wash and other jobs then I cleaned all the silverware. In the evening Dorothea, Susan and I went to Portland to see Billie. He is still in a lot of pain. I’ll be so glad when he begins to feel a lot better. Kim to the gym show at school tonight. Carmen and Lisa out getting worms to fish with.

A very nice day. It was very sunny and quite hot and muggy. I got the regular work done, swept, dusted, washed floors, made three pies, bread and rolls. Zak up and mowed the lawns. Bill was busy all day. He had Barry Richardson come over to give him an estimate on finishing the porch. Carmen, Zak and Fern down to see Billie tonight. Betty and Milan called again tonight. Bill and I up to see David’s new calf. He is very cute.
