The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Monday, May 16, 1983 BILLIE OPEN HEART SURGERY AT MAINE MEDICAL CENTER AGE 52 YEARS TWO MONTHS

I got up early, got my work done and got ready to go to Portland MM Center to be with Billie. He’d gone upstairs before we got there, it was around 11 AM. We waited for him to come from the operating room from 11:30 to 6:30 PM. We only saw him for a little while. He didn’t come to. He came through the operation just fine. He is very sick and sore, will be for a long while. Dorothea, Betty, Carmen and me. Bill worked on the porch

Tuesday, May 17, 1983 A Beautiful day, sun all day

I done up my regular work and did my ironing. We got ready Bill and I, and Dorothea came about 11:30. We went to the Maine Medical Center to see Billie. He is better and they have taken out most of the tubes. He was awake at times, still on the medication to keep him from pain. He was suffering pain. He looks good, I am very relieved the operation is over. I’m so please too. Hope and pray he will be okay from now on. We went to Grossman’s and got the plywood for the porch.
