The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 15 - 19, 1983

Friday, April 15, 1983

Cloudy, showery and rain. I cleaned closets in the bedroom. Also some other draws. This is the last day of school for a week. Kim babysitting tonight. Billie doing odd jobs. He went and got some sawdust. Dorothea went with him. Zak came up after school and put it in the barn for him.

Saturday, April 16, 1983 Milan been in hospital again

Awful weather. Well I done up the regular work. I did a big wash, made a pie and tarts. Also rolls. Betty, Walt and Zak up for supper. Kim to Portland with some friends all day. Betty Smith called today. Milan had just got home from hospital, he is bad. He goes back in early summer for heart operation.

Sunday, April 17, 1983 A MISERABLE DAY

Well it is still awful weather. Cloudy, showers in northern Maine up around the big rivers, Bangor and area. Heavy rain, some flooding. I worked at the desk most of the day. Joy came for milk. Kim called in evening. David had the holiday off tonight. Billie not very good today.

Monday, April 18, 1983 RAIN, cleaned the cellar

Still raining and miserable day. Late this PM it cleared and the sun came out late in PM. Moon out in evening. Anyway we got the cellar cleaned today. I’m so glad. Had callers today of all days. Raymond Leavitt, Bubba Clark and McDades. Had a very late supper. Billie got very tired today.

Tuesday, April 19, 1983

ANOTHER RAINY DAY. Yes, same old thing. Rain, rain, day after day. I got the bottom kitchen cupboards cleaned anyway with Zak’s help. Had a steak supper. Well it cleared again late in PM and all evening clear and a nice pretty moon.
