The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 8 - 11, 1990

 

Tuesday, May 8, 1990 a quite nice day, some rain

 

A nice sunny morning, on the cool side. Zack up early for coffee. The nurse came for Billie. Carmen came and did the shopping. In PM Dorothea, Betty Smith, Betty C and Susan called. Dorothea has begun to look better from her medication. I hope it continues and she will continue to improve. Brogan and Carmen here for supper. Brogan dropped off to sleep. Billie is some better yet a long way to go. I’ll be so glad when he gets his (blank).

 

 

 

Wednesday, May 9, 1990

 

A nice sunny day. I did a wash. The nurse came and gave Zak(She means Billie) his bath, shaved etc. Carmen and Bro came. Carmen gave Billie the electric (blank) for his hand. Zak up for coffee.

 

 

 

Thursday, May 10, 1990 ZAK MOVED

 

A rainy day and cloudy. I been busy. Done some kitchen draws. Billie to Dr. Petrone, also the health nurse came and checked him out today. Zak moved over to his new Riverside residents over in Harrison. Doctor Petrone said it was the stroke he had that caused his trouble. It wasn’t because of the circulation trouble. A therapist and health Dr. comes to see him.

 

 

 

Friday, May 11, 1990

 

A clear day but on the cool windy side. I been busy. Been folks in and out. Zak here this morning for coffee. He worked today cleaning up the shelter for Carmen. He got all moved out yesterday. He went to a wedding party for Peter Rogers.
