The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Tuesday, May 15, 1990

 

Very nice day, sunny and mild. I went to Bethel with Carmen to order her plants. Came home. Carmen worked hard at her place. Betty cleaning all day. Dorothea about the same, maybe a dite improved. Betty and Carmen papered at the shelter tonight. Betty mowed all of her lawns. No one seen Zak today.

 

 

 

Wednesday, May 16, 1990

 

A quite nice day. I done a wash. Made of fruit Jell-O. A chocolate pudding. Zack came and helped Carmen in PM and evening. Zak called here in PM. Carmen busy at her place doing a lot. Betty helped her. Bonnie Herring and Joyce Ballard came to see Billie. Dorothea is a dite better this PM. That is good news. Betty called here late in evening. She said she was better.

 

 

 

Thursday, May 17, 1990

 

Dorothea is better, she told Betty this morning. Mrs. (blank) was here this morning for Billie’s therapy. He is improving slowly. I did a big ironing this morning. It has been a rainy cloudy dismal day. I cooked a good beef soup for supper. Very good. Carmen, Zack and Brogan here. I went up to Bethel with Carmen to get some more plants. Dorothea here in PM. She is improving some. Raining hard this evening.

 

 

 

Friday, May 18, 1990

 

Well cloudy when we got up. As the forenoon wore on it got better, some sun and blue skies. I had Brogan a while today, she was very good. Carmen been very busy all day getting ready for the opening tomorrow. Dorothea called, she is doing better, but still got a long way to go.
