The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 24 - 27, 1990 Billie In Hospital

Tuesday, April 24, 1990

A nice day. I did the ironing. Cleaned smelts. They were nice for supper. Carmen did the shopping today. Brogan down to Danica and Leeanna’s. Zack worked over to his house lot today.

Wednesday, April 25, 1990

Cloudy this morning. It rained a little today. Kim made a visit today. I made a cake and pudding. Carmen came and brought up a potato salad for supper. It was very good. Carmen is better but not extra good. Billie went to bed and his hand got very bad all night. Dorothea is in serious condition with that salt (?) (Skin disease). We are all very worried about her. She is very apt to end up in the hospital and Billie in the nursing home.

Thursday, April 26, 1990 Perm

Partly sunny. Mild temp when Billie got up this morning. He was almost helpless. He is discouraged. No hand. Bowel problem. Zack gone to court today, up here for coffee. Kim took me down to Barb’s.

Friday, April 27, 1990  VERY VERY HOT, Billie to Hospital, Bad

Temps up to 80 today. So uncomfortably hot. Billie got up this morning about helpless. His hand is very bad. He finally got his shot. I helped him to get dressed, his shoes on. Zak came, he shaved him and got him washed. Billie got out to the barn and tended the hens. Brogan and I out in the swing most of the morning. We liked that. Carmen to town, did some work for Walt. Then got me some milk at the store. Betty and Dorothea here in PM. Carmen took Billie to emergency at NCM at suppertime. Billie to NCM hospital. He is in bad shape – stroke and heart.
