The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 4 - 7, 1990

Friday, May 4, 1990

A very nice day. Well Dorothea entered the Dr. office today for her first time. She got medication to take and he said it was a severe case. She called in on way home. She is in pain at all times. I’m so worried about her case. I hope the medicine won’t cause any bad or serious effects. The nurse came to see Billie this morning and helped him with his medicine shots etc.

Saturday, May 5, 1990 RAIN RAIN

Well again today it is raining. How sickening we have only had 2 or 3 nice days. Zack over to the Army training today. Brogan over with her father and grandparents today. Also will see her cousin Leslie. She is so pleased about that. Carmen came and got the mail. Esther called to see how Dorothea and Billie are. She was quite concerned. She and Cliff are coming this summer. Well the Hortons and Panzini and Martin all had a very nice fancy supper last night at Carmen and Kim’s. They watch the Kentucky Derby race. A nurse came today and checked Billie.

A better day, on the cloudy and windy side. I worked at the desk. Then went to North Conway with Carmen and Betty. We did some shopping. Had a good supper up there, brought home something for Billie. Zack was here. Dorothea here and soaked in the bathtub. She is in bad shape, her face looks a dite better in the face. She is bad bad condition. I’m and we all are so worried about her. I hope she gets some help and soon.

Monday, May 7, 1990 cool

A partly cloudy morning. I did the washing. Carmen called. She has so much to do. Also the health nurse was here to see Billie. He went down to the hospital for therapy. He brought a machine home to use himself on his hand. Dorothea is not getting a might of relief. She is downright sick. I hope she will soon begin to feel better. Zak and Walt got the platforms ready to set the tent on.
