The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 6 - 9, 1990

Wednesday, June 6, 1990

It is another cool day. I did a big wash. Carmen came and cleaned up the house. Today the therapy lady came and worked on Billie’s hand. There is an improvement. Also the nurse to bathe him and shave him. Only washed his back and arms. Carmen was here and got supper. Barbecued pork spareribs and chicken breast. She gets very nice meals. Cold and windy all day. Zak here this morning.

A quite nice day, not quite as cold during the middle of the day, it was very mild. Billie mowed lawns. Then got ready and went to the doctor. He is doing okay and he said he would call his eye Dr. for him Monday. Zak here in mid p.m. for something to eat. Jane Pillsbury here to see me again today. Betty cooked a ham for supper and mash potatoes and spinach greens. Carmen made brownies. Also Betty made some muffins. Very good. The puppy got hurt.

Friday, June 8, 1990 STEERS CAME

A fair day. Not too sunny. I did get on to the back porch some. I done regular work, washed and put a rinse on my hair today. Carmen up to her vegetable stand. No one came today to take care of him. Today Anse Buzzell brought two heifers steers. They are nice ones. Dorothea and Betty S called this p.m. Dorothea looks so much better. I’m so please. I haven’t heard from Betty H today.

A miserable cloudy coolish rainy day. Ended up with thundershowers tonight. I done up regular work, got the beans into baking. In PM Billie and Jane called, Brud and Verna also. Had a nice visit. Carmen worked at the business today. She and Kim got a real fancy supper tonight for guests. They had Betty, Walt, Tom Martin and Charlene, Tom H, Kim’s friend and themselves. Brogan up here but tired and went to sleep and didn’t eat. They came and got her. David here for coffee and later he came and helped to get the cows up from the shed to drink and eat.
