The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 1 - 3, 1990 Kim Gets Engaged

Tuesday, May 1, 1990 Kimberly Allie Horton

A not very good day for May 1. Rain, cloudy and late late in PM we got some sun than clouded up again. I was down to Betty’s with Betty Smith. We did Betty’s china cabinet in the dining room. Carmen and Bro down to see Billie. He isn’t so good as yesterday. Carmen and Brogan here for supper. Zak went to see a man about a job. Betty down to see Billie tonight. Dorothea didn’t feel like going. We are also worried about her and Billie too. Today Kim got a great great May first gift. She and her friend Tom out for supper. Tom presented her with a very nice diamond engagement ring. It is beautiful. I feel she has a great future with this young man. He is smart. Very well trained in life. I hope Kim will make him a very happy man and be what is expected for a nice smart wife.

Wednesday, May 2, 1990 Dorothea Jean Thomas

Today Dorothea has entered the (blank) hospital in Lewiston for treatment of her very bad case of (blank) which she has fought for years. I been thinking of her all the time. Also I’m very concerned about Billie and his problem. Well, Dorothea has a very bad case of psoriasis. She can go in down here for treatment beginning Friday. I hope she gets better. Billie still in upset condition. He may be home Friday.

Thursday, May 3, 1990 Mowed lawns SS $448

A nice sunny day. I made out the bills. Carmen and Kim gone to Norway. The carpenters are still at Betty’s working. Billie came home. Some improvement in his arm. He has a lot of medication to take. He was glad to get home. Yet his condition not too good either. He will have therapy on his arm. I hope it will get back to normal or a lot improved. Zack got him at the hospital. He mowed lawns today for first time.
