The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 4 - 7, 1990 Brogan Missing

Wednesday, April 4, 1990

Raining very hard this morning as it did all night. I mixed up a cheese spread. I made cocoa, got the greens ready for supper. Betty, Walt, Carmen, Brogan up for supper. We had a very good baked ham slice. A cloudy dreary looking miserable day. I done a few odd and end jobs. Kim came up. We don’t see her very much.

Thursday, April 5, 1990 SUN TODAY

Well after a week of rain, clouds and snow we saw the sun today. A nice day, sun. A lot of clouds around. It was on the coolish side. I didn’t do much today, regular work. Betty and Carmen and Brogan came, all concerned about Zack these days. He don’t have any luck getting a job at all. I sure hope he does get one. Billie didn’t do much today either. Zak up for coffee this morning.

Snow on the ground when we got up this morning. In a short time the sun appeared and it melted the mess. I did a wash. Carmen cleaned. BROGAN LOST. Brogan disappeared today which sent all the hearts a flutter in this family. They hollered, traveled, looked and looked and hunted everywhere. Called the police. After a while she was discovered in a cupboard in the barn. She was kind of worked up and nervous. What a big relief when we got her. Sold Bill’s car today. Walt bought it for Zak to have to go to work with. $500.

No snow here. Brogan over to her daddy’s, he came for her at about 10 AM. Kim worked today. She called here after work. She don’t come very often. Carmen had a relaxing day. She got some things for Brogan today. Didn’t see Betty all day. Zack came after he got home from National Guard. Got it started and running. He is pleased to have a vehicle of his own. I sure hope he pays his father for it.
