The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 3 - 5, 1990

Sunday, June 3, 1990 Susan left for Ohio

Hot and humid. Walt up for coffee and donuts. David came later. I didn’t do much. Carmen did quite well this weekend. Kim worked this weekend. Billie’s arm a dite better. Bro came home from visiting her father and brother tonight. She had such a good time. Zack on the rampage last night. Car broke down. He is very annoying in the neighborhood , people worrying about him and his whereabouts. Susan and Monica left for Ohio to go to Chris’s graduation. I’m very glad for him and his family.

Monday, June 4, 1990 Carmen began working.

A miserable day, cloudy, cold, windy and dreary. I did my wash. I helped Carmen, she set her plants out in the garden. She began working for us today. At this time Billie is so helpless in his arm and hand. It was better the nurse said today. Carmen made a chocolate pudding and a lemon cake pudding this morning. Very good. She gets such good meals. Well today Carmen began to work for me or us till our dying day. This is the biggest relief of anything I’ve known for a long time. No supper to think of anymore etc. She is a good cook.

Nice, sunny this morning when we got up. A nice day. I done up regular work, helped Billie. I did the ironing. I got the mail ready to go. Carmen did the shopping. In PM she came and got me and Betty. We went up to see her rooms since she moved downstairs. They looked nice where she and Brogan will be sleeping in their new bedroom. Carmen had a very good supper again tonight. Zack spent the night in town last night??
