The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Wednesday, May 23, 1990

 

A fair kind of day. Some partly cloudy and some rain showers. Well we got a lot done. Betty S couldn’t come. Betty H did also Carmen came and helped with the beds etc. Kim came and she helped me. She did refrigerator and stove, a very good job on both.

 

 

 

Thursday, May 24, 1990

 

At last a very nice day. Sunny and quite warm temperatures. Today Betty and Betty came and they did the living room and kitchen and most of the back porch. It looks very very nice and all cleaned. Today the lady came to see me about getting working help. Carmen worked at her store, done very well. Kim up here today and done some more work. She did a very good job also. Zack here for coffee this morning and for supper. Carmen got the supper. She and Brogan also here for supper. She washed kitchen floor after supper.

 

 

 

Friday, May 25, 1990 a very nice day, sunny

 

My housecleaning all done. Betty H and Betty S finished my housecleaning today. It looks very nice. Kimmy, Zak and Carmen had a hand in it also. I’m very thankful and pleased. I did odd and end jobs at times. Darned old knees. This is been a beautiful day, very warm. Carmen came and got supper, very good. Then she and I and Brogan went and got asparagus for the stand tomorrow over to Brownfield.

 

 

 

Saturday, May 26, 1990

 

A beautiful hot sunny day. A yard sale up there to the shelter were Carmen’s business is. They did okay. Carmen did very well in her business. I enjoyed the house being all cleaned, it looks so nice thanks to all who did it. David down this forenoon for coffee and visit.
