The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 16 - 19, 1990

Monday, April 16, 1990 A Very Nice Day

It was a very nice mild day. One of those very few of so far this month. I did the washing then I went down to Betty’s with Carmen, Brogan and Betty up to the Heritage Room. A wonderland. Visited a long while, came home, got supper started. Watched soaps. Zack up for supper.

I did the ironing. Carmen got the grocery list and got the groceries. Brogan down to Danica’s for a while. A miserable day. About suppertime it cleared away and the sun came out. Well tonight Carmen had a big surprise for us. She went home and in afternoon she prepared the most delicious supper. Chicken, green peas and buttermilk biscuits and topped it off, a most delicious dessert. Chocolate whipped cream roll. It was such a good supper. Billie had problems with his hand in PM and he had a problem to eat.

A quite nice day, on the cool side yet sunny. It was windy. Billie’s hand was paralyzed and he couldn’t use it. He finally got washed and shaved. It has gone up beyond the elbow. In late in PM he said it was a dite better. Dorothea came and tried to get him to see a Dr. but couldn’t get one. He finally got a call to come to see Dr. Doyle tomorrow about 12 noon. Carmen and Kim painted at Betty’s today. Zack came up and got the manure spreader. They will haul it tomorrow.

A beautiful day. Sunny all day and mild. Billie to Dr. Doyle. Dorothea took him down. He wants him to go to a clinic in Massachusetts that just works on patients with diabetes and artery blockages etc. So he is going up there in June. Dr. Doyle said nothing can be done for him or his condition here. He isn’t any better than he was yesterday. Carmen and Zak are hauling manure at Walt’s today. Betty up and got supper. She made it at home and brought it up. Very good.
