The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 19 - 22, 1990 Billie's 59th Birthday

I did the washing. Made a pudding. Cooked a good corn beef for supper. Carmen here and helped. She and Kim here for lunch and Brogan. Carmen did the shopping. Got the supper, made a strawberry shortcake for supper. A very good supper. Watched soaps in PM. Billie raked some more lawns.

A nice day after the clouds cleared. It snowed last night but it all went again and the bare ground appeared. It was sickening to wake up and see everything all white and snowing. It changed fast. Zak down to Walt. He and Walt over to Harrison. Carmen gone to town and done the shopping. Dorothea and Betty Smith to exercise class in Raymond. Betty and Carmen called in PM, brought up some candy.

Cloudy and windy, most all day, at about suppertime it cleared up good with the sun shining. Carmen and Brogan here this noon time, she made the lunch. Bob Thomas called on Billie’s this forenoon. I did my ironing. It seemed good to have some chocolates to bite on. Wind blowed the door open and broke the glass. Heavy winds most all day.

I got up, done up regular work. I made a chiffon cake and rolls. They all came out good. We got steaks out for supper. We had a birthday supper for Billie’s 59th. Zak, Carmen, Betty S and Brogan here for supper. We had a delicious steak supper. Betty grilled the steaks at her house, they were so good. Also had salad, baked potatoes, asparagus with cheese sauce. In evening Betty, Walt and Dorothea came for ice cream and cake. They all enjoyed the supper very much.
