The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Zak got home today and got his clothes, got things taken care of at the National Guard over to Norway. He had a good steak supper at Betty and Walt’s. We was very glad to see him, he likes his job and is pleased to be earning money. I hope all goes well with him. He done all of it on his own. Zack left to go back at about 7:30 PM. I hope and pray he has very good luck.

A nice surprise when we got up this morning. It was good for everyone to see it. I done up regular work, got Billie fixed up with his things for his hand. I washed today. Carmen took Billie to the Dr. at Fryeburg for his feet. No one has heard from Zack. We would like to know where he is if he is all right. He was last seen at the shelter Saturday night. Walt out looking around for him.

Hot and humid. Walt up for coffee and donuts. David came later. I didn’t do much. Carmen did quite well this weekend. Kim worked this weekend. Billie’s arm a dite better. Bro came home from visiting her father and brother tonight. She had such a good time. Zack on the rampage last night. Car broke down. He is very annoying in the neighborhood , people worrying about him and his whereabouts. Susan and Monica left for Ohio to go to Chris’s graduation. I’m very glad for him and his family.

Monday, June 4, 1990 Carmen began working.

A miserable day, cloudy, cold, windy and dreary. I did my wash. I helped Carmen, she set her plants out in the garden. She began working for us today. At this time Billie is so helpless in his arm and hand. It was better the nurse said today. Carmen made a chocolate pudding and a lemon cake pudding this morning. Very good. She gets such good meals. Well today Carmen began to work for me or us till our dying day. This is the biggest relief of anything I’ve known for a long time. No supper to think of anymore etc. She is a good cook.
