The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Thursday, September 15, 1988 WALTER AMBROSE HORTON IV 19 years, NEW GLASSES

 

Zack’s 19th birthday. We all are thinking of him. He is one of the best. I’m proud of him. 19 years ago Betty and Walt moved into their place. I’m so glad. I hope they will always keep it in this family. I love it. I’m sorry I let it go but I did keep parts of it. As fate had his way we are lucky it came back. I made a squash pie this morning. Billie picked the tomatoes. I wrote two get well cards this morning. Thena and Hazel Shaw. I got my new glasses today. I can’t see very good yet. I’ll be glad when I get used to them. I was down to Betty’s in a.m. Ed and Eva went home today.

 

 

 

Friday, September 16, 1988

 

A very nice clear day. I did a wash. Watched TV soaps. I couldn’t see very well so I couldn’t read. Brogan and Betty came. Brogan here while Betty took her shower. Betty had company, Terrie Moffitt. She went to school with her. She used to live in the neighborhood. Billie did his outside work. They went up to camp tonight. It was warmer than yesterday.

A quite nice day. I was quite busy most of the day. In PM it got cloudy. Carmen came for supper tonight. Brogan is over to Lewiston with her father and her grandparents. David came this morning and visited for a long time. Betty came and got me to go down to see the new window in the apartment. Barry worked this forenoon. Didn’t see Kim today.
