The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Wednesday, October 12, 1988

 

It dawned bright and sunny, on the cool windy side. Kimmy took her car to garage. Billie went down to get her. She came here for breakfast. Nice liver, toasted homemade rolls and melted butter, orange juice. She said it was delicious, also toasted raisin bread. I looked over some catalogs today. Carmen worked at Betty’s today. They did quite a lot. Kim got some things for me at the store today. Billie done a few odd jobs today.

 

 

 

Thursday, October 13, 1988

 

Cloudy in a.m. but it burned off and quite nice day. Dorothea and David up to Vermont to see his grandmother and other family. Billie and I down to Betty Smith’s for a visit and coffee. Betty and Carmen finished up their work. Billie did some odd and end jobs then watched TV.

 

 

 

Friday, October 14, 1988

 

The weather is better today. Had a frost last night. I been busy all forenoon. I made some molasses cookies and other things. Washed. Carmen, Kim and Brogan gone birthday shopping. Billie cleaned up the flowers and plants. It was quite cold in a.m., later it warmed up. Betty and Betty up to camp tonight.

 

 

 

Saturday, October 15, 1988

 

A mostly cloudy day. I done up the work, washed floors and made bread. Carmen here early for breakfast. David came, he helped Billie a lot. Done a lot of jobs Billie wanted to get done, jobs he couldn’t do alone. Joan watched Brogan today. She had to watch her here at Betty’s. Brogan cried and was scared. Dorothea out taking pictures today of the house she may sell. Betty and Walt gone and got his business paper Walt always gets every week.
