The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Sunday, October 23, 1988

 

Cloudy all forenoon then it cleared off. I worked at the desk. Billie mowed rest of Walt’s field. Carmen and Brogan came. Carmen got another chicken down in the field. I checked out catalogs.

 

 

 

Monday, October 24, 1988

 

Rainy all day. Well, I got up, did the washing. Then I got ready to go with Betty and the kids, Carmen, Kim and Brogan. We went to Gray to a furniture store. Bought desk, two chairs and the couch. Came home, got supper. Brogan and Carmen called.

 

 

 

Tuesday, October 25, 1988

 

A very nice day. It was sunny and clear. 50s temps. I didn’t do much. I was going to work on my bills etc. Kim called. Carmen here for lunch. Betty and Brogan came. Billie did the leaves. Carmen to Weight Watchers, lost 10 pounds. Betty S up to camp with Betty H. They got things taken care of for winter.

 

 

 

Wednesday, October 26, 1988 Jersey went today

 

A nice day. I done up the work. Carmen came and cleaned. In morning Betty and I went over to Carmen’s. We brought Brogan back with us. Carmen had to take a water from her place to sample. To be tested at Norway. Anse Buzzell came and bought the Jersey. Brogan liked her very much. She will miss her. Betty brought up the check for the beef. Carmen took both of his checks down and cashed them. Also did grocery shopping.
