The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Octobert 4 - 7, 1988 Aunt Betty's Birthday

 

Tuesday, October 4, 1988 David has a new dog Alyssa, Steer

 

It has been a mostly cloudy day. A dite of sun. No rain. Kim came up today. She and Billie cleaned the cellar, it looks very nice. Windows and all. She did a good job. Betty, Carmen and Brogan went up to North Conway shopping for Brogan’s birthday and grocery shopping. Mine too. The steer went tonight and Wade came and got it. Tonight David has a new dog, Alyssa. Carmen gave her to him. I hope it will work out okay. He is so good to animals.

 

 

 

Wednesday, October 5, 1988

 

A cloudy and rainy day. I didn’t do much. I did some odd and end jobs. No TV soaps because of the ballgames. In PM I wrote to Peg, George and Betty M. In PM Billie went up to Wade Kimball’s to get the liver. Betty and Betty to Windham, done some shopping. And Betty got her new glasses. Carmen and Brogan came for a little while. Carmen worked tonight for Kim, she went to the fair. Kim worked for Carmen today. Betty S got a hand push lawn mower today.

 

 

 

Thursday, October 6, 1988 Betty Smith 69 years

 

Today was Betty Smith birthday, 69 years. I done up regular work, did some writing, got ready. Dorothea came. She, Betty Crook, Kim and I and Brogan all went down to Betty Smith about 1 PM. Billie came a little while after. We took gifts and a cake. She had nice gifts and cards. She got jewelry, cigarettes and money. She was very pleased her brothers (?). It was nice. She was real pleased. Had liver for supper and onions. Carmen and Brogan was here. Dex worked on the house lot today.

 

 

 

 

Friday, October 7, 1988

 

A cloudy day, not much sun. Kim came, she and Billie defrosted the freezer, washed windows in garage, tie up and the truck windows. She was a good helper for Billie. I cooked the beef heart and tongue. Got cleaned up from that job. Billie done a lot of odd and end jobs. Carmen worked and went to the fair after work. She got home early. Brogan has been to Betty’s most of this week. Carmen called on way home.
