The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 8 - 10, 1988 Zak Graduates from Fort Leon Wood And Returns Home

 

Tuesday, November 8, 1988 George Bush

 

This was a presidential election day. Betty H and Betty S came and did a lot of cleaning, got my bedroom, living room, park of my kitchen done. And all the windows inside and out. I made a cheesecake. Kim came, she went to town for me. George Bush becomes president.

 

 

 

Wednesday, November 9, 1988 Zack called

 

Today Betty came and finished the housecleaning. I done a lot of odds and end jobs, puttering around. Walt up in PM. Billie done outside work and watched TV. I tried to get rest of my orders ready. Brogan had Joan and Andrew to babysit for her today. Got a call from Zack today. Betty did. He won’t leave Fort Leon Wood Missouri till late tomorrow 5:40 PM. So we won’t see him till Friday sometime. Kim up for lunch today.

 

 

 

Thursday, November 10, 1988 Zack graduated at Fort Leonard Wood

 

I done a lot today getting ready for Zak’s arrival. I had Brogan most of the forenoon. Betty S and Betty H were down town shopping this morning. Betty took Brogan down to her house till Carmen came. Dorothea called in evening. She and Betty and Joy out walking. They been waiting all day to hear from Zack. He left the base after graduation for home. A long trip ahead. He got into Boston Logan Airport at 12 PM. Walt said he would go up to get him. He left at1 p.m. He and Zack got home at about 6:30 AM Friday a.m. Betty, Kim, Carmen, Brogan and I all was there when he came. We all was so glad to see that gorgeous looking young man. He looked like a million. Showers tonight.
