The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 19 - 22, 1988 Betty Home From The Hospital, Fern's Birthday

 

Wednesday, October 19, 1988 Betty came home, MEAT

 

It cleared off in the night and it has been a nice day. It was a very warm, 45 to 50°. I done up regular work. Watched morning soap operas. I made a apple pie, applesauce. Carmen came and cleaned. Kim called. And in PM Betty came home from hospital. She is better, but she is going later for operation. Gallbladder. She and Walt were here for supper. They enjoyed it very much. Roast pork, very good. Turnip, mashed potatoes, shell beans, apple pie and applesauce. Billie over to Norway and got the meat today. Carmen cleaned the cupboards in kitchen.

 

 

 

Thursday, October 20, 1988

 

A nice day, on the cool side. I got the work done up, made a cake for Fern. We got ready, went up to Fern’s at about 2 PM. Fern got a nice lot of gifts, cards, candy and some money towards a new dress. We had a good time. Came home at about 3 PM. Billie mowed leaves today. Betty, Carmen and Kim worked up in the apartment. Betty S and Betty H are finishing it tonight. Carmen and Brogan called. Carmen got paid her commission tonight.

 

 



 

Friday, October 21, 1988

 

It was sunny today all day. I done regular work. Made a banana cake. Susan called. Carmen, Brogan came. Betty called and Kim. Billie and Carmen took the fence down. Billie got the field about two thirds mowed. Dorothea came early this morning and got Bill’s car. She used it today on her business. She looked like a million when she came all dolled up for her work. I did a wash.

 

 

 

Saturday, October 22, 1988

 

A bad day all around. It rained, heavy winds, a bad day. And to cap it all Betty lost all but four of her pullets while she and Walt were gone. They got out and something chased them off. She got back three in bad shape. I done regular work, made bread. David here in forenoon. Carmen and Brogan came. Billie done regular chores and got caught up on his reading and I did too. Betty called in evening.
