The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Sunday, September 11, 1988

It was a quite nice sunny day, on the cool windy side. I done up the regular work. Walt up for coffee. Carmen and Brogan came, we got ready, went up to camp Twin Oaks. A delicious spare rib barbecue lunch and salad cooked by Kim and Bob Gallagher. It was very good. Everyone enjoyed it very much. Came home, got supper. Dorothea, Betty, Eva, Carmen, Brogan, Walt, Betty and I were there.

I did the washing. Carmen came and cleaned. I went to town with Betty and Brogan, took Carmen down to get Bill’s car. It looked very nice. I hate to sell it. The town of Bridgton is a mess. A lot of construction going on. We watched TV soaps. I made a chocolate pudding. Today Zack begins his last leg in the service. He started his schooling at Fort Leonard Wood Missouri. I wish him the very best. Just nine weeks from today he will be all done.

Partly cloudy and sunny. I dite of rain. Betty and Brogan came up. Betty did my phone numbers. Kim here for breakfast. She had just got through 11 to 7 shift, on the tired side. When Betty came she and Brogan stayed for lunch. Also called Press Herald and ordered the PH with Milan’s death. Also she called the Mercy Hospital for Billie. Dorothea came in early PM and worked on Billie’s papers. I did a big ironing.

A quite nice day. I done up the regular work. I watched TV shows. Billie got ready to go to the Dr. in Portland for his eyes. Dorothea took him. Fern came down here while they was gone. Also Brogan was here while Betty mowed. Betty was here in PM. Carmen was late getting home because of the traffic. It was on the cool side. Hurricane Gilbert in the Jamaican island area is the worst one ever in history. Kim came up today. She went out with Bob last night for a Chinese dinner.
