The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

A very nice sunny day. On the cold side. A busy day. I made two pies first thing, lemon sponge and date filled. Carmen came, she started the cleaning and she took Betty Smith to town for eye checkup. Billie’s colds still bad. I did my hair today. Zack worked up to Kim’s today. Brogan has a cold today. Dorothea called in to use Bill’s car today to go to work.

Thursday, November 24, 1988 Thanksgiving

Well we had a very nice Thanksgiving at Betty and Walt. A beautiful sunny day, on the cold side. Up early, done my morning work. Washed, took a bath. Down to Betty’s for the big day. They prepared the nicest meal, Turkey, roast pork, turnip, onions, shell beans, celery, mashed potato, cranberry sauce, salad, hot rolls, nice desserts made by their daughters. It was worth a million to have Zack there.

Friday, November 25, 1988 BETTY H TO HOSPITAL, EARTHQUAKE

A very nice day. Sunny, not too cold. Well about 2 AM Betty had to go to the hospital by ambulance. She was very sick all last evening. Then about 11 PM she was stricken. She had a very uncomfortable day. Carmen and Dorothea went to New Hampshire shopping all day. They did mine for me or a lot of it. I’m so glad. Tonight while we was watching the news we had a earthquake. Brogan over to her dad’s for the weekend. He came for her at about 1 PM. Brogan here and down to Walt and Zack.
