The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

I did my washing and other jobs beside regular work then I went down to see them work on the shed. Alan came up, they got the big crossbeam up and the other post with all their strength and the tractor. Alan helped a lot. I watched soaps in PM.

 

 

 

Tuesday, September 27, 1983 letter to Es, Carmen looking for a job or applying

 

A very nice day, on the mild side. I got a letter off to Esther. Today Carmen went to the Maine Medical Center to apply for a job. I done up my work than Billie took me down to see them work on the shed. I came home at noon and back in PM till three then I came home to watch General Hospital. I had a roast beef supper. Kim came up a minute. They got more roof on and the last big post up. They was pooped putting up the last big post. It was a struggle. Alan went with Carmen and didn’t come up.

 

 

 

Wednesday, September 28, 1983

 

A very nice sunny day. Alan came up early. They worked on the roof, got that all done and the steel roofing all on. Bill got quite tired and at night or in evening he had bad cramps. I done up the regular work then I went down and watched them work on the shed. In PM I stayed at home and watch TV soaps and got supper. Dorothea called.

Thursday, September 29, 1983 Walt’s beef went today

 

Another beautiful day. Carmen called in this morning and had breakfast. I done up my work and got ready and went to town with Betty. Today they was expecting the lumber to come for rest of the shed but it didn’t. So Bill just sat around all day. He wouldn’t take a shower and clean up. Dorothea called. Billie been busy all day doing jobs to get the falls work done up. Kim and Carmen up in evening. Kim selling candy for the class. Carmen and I planned some work for Saturday.
