The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 3 - 6, 1983

Sunday, July 3, 1983

Foggy and cloudy in early a.m. but it cleared after a short time. Dorothea and David came. David and Walt and Zak helped to put the mowing machine on tractor. Dorothea, Kim and I picked strawberries. Betty and family with Tom and Charlene went up to camp. Kids came home after a little while. Carmen away for the day. I washed. Billie sharpened mowing machine. Bill painted the rail on the porch. It looks very good.

Monday, July 4, 1983 HOT, mowed hay, Billie got his hay

A very hot day and humid. Didn’t get up till 7 AM. A big day for Bridgton. All the goings-on. Done up regular work. David came and said Butch told him to mow the hay. He did and Billie got his hay. Fern up today. She and kids went to the parade. Nothing at all to mention. They all came up and Betty and family brought the picnic lunch. Hamburgers, hot dogs etc. up here instead of up to camp. Dorothea here, Tom and Charlene.

Not a very clear day but on the hot side. They didn’t come to rake Walt’s hay till about 2 PM and then the showers began to come and they got some of the hay baled and in but the awful showers and rain came and the hay was rained out. I’m sorry the hay was ready about 10:30 but they didn’t come. I did a wash today.

Cloudy and a dreary day. Kim went to town on her bike, got a perm. I made out the bills, got them off. Bill worked on the porch. Dawn called. We combed Heidi out. We picked 25 boxes strawberries.
