The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 7 - 10, 1983 Kim to Boston

 

Thursday, July 7, 1983

 

I was busy today, it was a nice day. Betty and Kim to North Windham to shop. About 2 PM Butch came and raked and baled Walt’s hay. Tonight they got it in. Walt and family, Bill and Billie drove trucks. Carmen was very tired when she got home. Bill finished the back porch. Dorothea called. Betty and Kim shopped for me today and Billie down town here.

 

 

 

Friday, July 8, 1983

 

A beautiful day. I cleaned my breezeway. Did a wash. Dorothea here and helped Billie with some more papers. Kids all over to Old Home Days at Harrison. Susan and Monica called in evening. Bill worked at Betty’s today. Kimmy’s time is getting closer to going away. Zak mowed lawns today.

 

 

 

Saturday, July 9, 1983

 

A nice day, on the windy side, quite cold too. I’ve been busy all day. Up and got the breakfast, washed, changed beds, swept the whole house. Made bread, washed the floors, picked the berries. Got supper, has some very good white beans. Kim up today and Zak. Kim goes tomorrow. Carmen getting ready for the party.

 

 

 

Sunday, July 10, 1983 KIM LEFT TO GO TO A SCHOOL IN BOSTON, hair color

 

About 7 AM Kim left with Betty and Walt to go to a art prep school in Boston for five weeks. Will miss her. Betty and Walt went down to Aunt Vi’s. Carmen came home in late PM. Zak alone most of the time.
