The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 21 - 24, 1983

Thursday, July 21, 1983

A nice day, very warm. I done up the work etc. Went to town. Came home, got dinner, took care of the shopping things, watched some of the shows. Delores still isn’t good. She didn’t go to town. I went down to Betty’s to see her living room since she has changed it. It looks very nice. They had company for supper. Bill worked at Betty’s. Billie got call from Portland. They want him to come in August 2 for tests.

Friday, July 22, 1983 KIM CAME HOME

Kim came home today after being away at school for the first time in her young life. She has signed into a school of fashion design at Boston for five weeks course. She likes all very much. She don’t care for the city life. I have missed her and hate the thought of she and Carmen leaving home for good, which will happen sooner or later. Zak has a few years yet to finish up and get ready to go. Carmen didn’t have to work today because it rained. Wind blowed awful hard.

Saturday, July 23, 1983 David’s hay

A very nice day. A nice hay day and they got David’s hay all in. I done up the regular work, washed floors. Bill fixed the stove. I made bread, rolls and cake. Baked bread. Kim called in today a little while. We went up to TWIN OAKS for supper. But the host and hostess did not show up till the last thing.

Sunday, July 24, 1983 KIM GONE BACK

Well this is been a cloudy miserable day. I had the house all shut up. Kim called a couple times and finally called to say goodbye for three weeks. I miss her now and she has only has been gone a few hours. Carmen and Betty took her to meet the bus.
