The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 25 - 28, 1983 Billie to MMC for Tests

 

Thursday, August 25, 1983 Billie to MMC hospital all day

 

Another beautiful day. I did up my work and then Betty and I to town. I came home. I watched shows all PM. I got supper. Billie to the Maine Medical Center all day in Portland to have dye tests etc. and to see if they can find out what his problem is with his hands but didn’t find a thing. So now he has got to go back in a month again. Bill painted around the door steps. They look much better.

 

 

 

Friday, August 26, 1983

 

In early a.m. it was foggy and cloudy in a.m. then it cleared and became very hot and humid. I did a wash then I watched soaps in PM. I made a pie in forenoon. Bill didn’t do anything. Billie done his regular chores and work. He went down to Fern’s. Dorothea called.

 

 

 

Saturday, August 27, 1983 Betty and Walt and Zak left at 7:45 to go to Rhode Island

 

Sunny in the morning, no fog. Had little shower last night, lightning and thunder. Betty, Walt and Zak left early to go to Rhode Island to get some more furniture etc. Fern up today and for supper. She was pleased to come up.

 

 

 

Sunday, August 28, 1983

 

Dorothea and David came down and called. Dorothea and David came after supper and did the living room rug, it sure looks a lot cleaner. Betty, Walt and Zak got home at about 8:30 or 9 PM.
