The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 11 - 13, 1983

Monday, July 11, 1983 Peas

Partly cloudy and some sun. I got a letter off to Esther. I did up the work, went to town. I washed. I watched afternoon TV shows. Today we had our first mess of peas. Betty and Walt got home at about 9:30 PM. They didn’t see Kim but she was to meet a friend up there. She likes it so far. She will stay at the YWCA.

Tuesday, July 12, 1983 Susan and kids left, ATE ON NEW BACK PORCH TONIGHT

Partly cloudy and a lot of sun. It was a dite cloudy when we got up, not cold. I got up and got the breakfast, done up my work and got ready to go to the airport with Dorothea to take Susan and the kids to the airport to go to Florida to visit with her mother and father. They all looked very good. When I got back I went down to Betty’s to see all the things she got at Vi’s and I had her kitchen table and chairs. Betty fixed and arranged things on the porch and it looked very nice. Betty and I washed and clean the things they got yesterday. CARMEN gone up to Vermont for a interview for a job. Lisa went too. I hope they both get something up there. Picked our last mess of strawberries.

Quite hot and humid most of the day. Then the wind came up, not so much humidity. Ate breakfast on porch, that was nice. I done up my work and then I went down to Betty’s. She showed me the shed chamber etc. Then we washed the root beer bottles and made a double batch of root beer. Bill put up the shelf over my washing machines.
