The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 16 - 18, 1983 Zak's Birthday Party

 

Friday, September 16, 1983 new windows on back porch, Carmen gone to Orono for a visit

 

A nice day except a few clouds, not rain clouds. I done up the work. Did a wash. Then I watched TV soaps. About 11:30 Barry and his father came and put the combo windows on the porch. They look so nice. Betty came up. Carmen called to. She was on her way to pay her friends up there at Orono a surprise visit. Billie been busy all day. He cleaned up all the cuke vines and squash vines. Our garden is nearly all gone now. Barry and his father finished up at Walt’s today.

 

 

 

Saturday, September 17, 1983 cloudy

 

Sent for sugar bowl. It has been kind of showery and cloudy today. I was busy all morning. I made bread, brownies etc. David, Dawn, Charlene called. I didn’t get a chance to wash floor till p.m. Dorothea down to Biddeford. Joy called in evening. Betty, Walt and Zak to Portland. Kim worked all day. Billie busy all day.

 

 

 

Sunday, September 18, 1983

 

Sun came out. A quite nice day. I done up the work, took a bath and went up to the cottage. They got the docks in and then had Sloppy Joe’s. Came back to Betty’s and had Zak’s birthday. He got nice gifts, a good amount of money, cake and ice cream. Vince was there, they went to the movies after supper. Carmen got home from Orono about 1 PM. Alan came with her. She was glad to get back.
