The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 1 - 4, 1983

Thursday, September 1, 1983 a beautiful day

After the fog cleared it was a beautiful day. Very nice and warm. I went to town with Dorothea, Kim, Susan and Monica. Betty up here for breakfast. Billie mowed Walt’s clover. I went down to Betty’s in PM to see the new porch. Bill down there all day. A nice job. Billie and Carmen set the rest of the stakes. Zak is some better but still not just right. Carmen, Kim just called with Bill’s Ex-Lax. Carmen gone to see Alan this evening.

I done up the regular work. I did a wash. They finished up the new porch today. I watched TV programs. I got some Swiss chard greens for supper. David called in late PM.

Saturday, September 3, 1983 HOT

Another very nice sunny day, on the very hot side. I got up early as usual. I got our breakfast, made the beds then I got ready and went to town. Got back home about 8:45 then I did rest of the work. Washed the floors, made bread and rolls. Betty Smith called and talked. I didn’t do much this PM. I read papers and sat on the porch. Zak mowed lawns. Carmen, Alan and Kim painted their new porch. Billie raked the hay then he, Walt and Zak got it in. They set the horses into the field today.

A nice day, it was on the cloudy side so it wasn’t as hot. Billie worked all day and did his lawns, the trimming, the lawn mower was broken. He had to fix it. Bill watched the darned old ballgame and after supper a darned old football. Kim called, also Alan and Carmen and Zak up to.
