The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 13 -16, 1983

Saturday, August 13, 1983 a beautiful sunny day

 

Betty and Walt left at 7 AM to go get Kim. Also they went to Rhode Island to Walt’s Aunt Vi’s. I baked beans, made a cake. Got ready and went to Laurie’s wedding. It was very nice and every thing was okay. A nice guy, they got some nice gifts.

 

 

 

Sunday, August 14, 1983

 

Kim, Betty and Walt got home at about 6 PM from Rhode Island. Kim was so pleased to get home and to now she didn’t have to go back. She looks so nice. Her dog was crazy wild to see her. Betty and Walt were tired. Carmen and Alan painted some of the fence today. Zak mowed lawns. David’s mom went home.

 

 

 

Monday, August 15, 1983

 

A nice sunny day. I did the wash, dried it outside. Betty took Zak and Kim to the orthodontist in Portland. Bill didn’t do anything. Carmen was going to take Kim and Zak but she couldn’t get time off.

 

 

 

Tuesday, August 16, 1983

 

A very nice day. I went down to Betty’s to see the new school clothes. The new little white house. Kim up to the camp to stay all PM and tonight, she and Tara. I had a good supper. Roast beef, beans, cukes, lettuce etc. The vegetables are so good.
