The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 19 - 22, 1983

 

Monday, September 19, 1983 CARMEN NEW JOB, HOT AGAIN

 

Carmen started a new job today a Microwave Techniques in Raymond. I did a wash, went down to Betty’s to see where the new shed is going. I also went down to our shed. Bill worked for Betty helping to do the shed. Billie busy all day.

 

 

 

Tuesday, September 20, 1983 HOT, Permanent

 

I done up my work, shampooed my hair and went to Barbara’s and got a permanent. I went down to Betty’s where they are working on shed. Too hot, so they didn’t work in PM. I had a cold supper.

 

 

 

Wednesday, September 21, 1983

 

A nice day, hot but a good breeze all day. I did the refrigerator on the breezeway. I did some ironing. I went down to Betty’s where they was working on the shed. Betty and I over to Brill’s to get lumber.

 

 

 

Thursday, September 22, 1983 beef went tonight (Buster), RAIN, got a new calf

 

Kind of rainy in early a.m. It stopped raining and by noon the sun was shining. Betty and I went to town today, came home, got dinner etc. Then I went down to Betty’s, we worked in her shed chamber. Carmen up here for supper. She enjoyed it very much. Kim to Portland with some of her friends shopping. They had such a good time. She saw Jeff. He is doing real well at the new job at the mall. The beef went tonight and Wes brought Billie another calf. A Hereford to raise for beef another year.
