The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 25 - 28, 1981

Saturday, April 25, 1981 RAIN, Billie to Groveton New Hampshire with Howard Millett

A rainy miserable day. I done up regular work, washed, made rolls, washed floors and clean the draws in the kitchen. Bill didn’t do much, he was out most of the day. In PM he watched the ballgame, in a.m. he and girls Carmen and Kim, went fishing. Billie up to Groveton New Hampshire with Howard Millett.

Sunday, April 26, 1981 DAYLIGHT TIME

Well this is been the best day we have seen in a long long time, sunny and clouds in the morning, in PM mostly sunny. Bill and Billie hauled Walt dressing out, hauled ours. Some down to Walt’s, some over to Ilan’s. Got most of ours out. Kim called a few times. Zak was with Bill and Billie hauling the manure. Carmen went fishing with Tom. She called in evening.

Sunny when we got up this morning. It was quite a nice day. Bill and Billie hauled rest of the manure. Also hauled some down to Walt’s. They went up and hauled Joy’s all out. I cleaned my bottom cupboards in the kitchen. Made a chocolate pudding for supper. A nice sunny day, a dite on the windy side.

A pretty good day, it was cloudy in a.m., it cleared and it was a real nice day. Bill up to Joy’s to work on her lawn swing. Billie harrowed. I called at Betty’s, her house looks nice. Very pretty place. I cleaned the electric stove, refrigerator and cupboards in the kitchen. Betty’s house all CLEANED.
