The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 12 - 14, 1981 Kim's 15th Birthday

Sunday, April 12, 1981 KIMBERLY ALLIE HORTON 15TH BIRTHDAY, SPACE SHUTTLE OFF, COLD

The space shuttle got off today, hope it will have good luck. Down to Betty’s for Kim’s 15th birthday. She got nice things, a pretty cake made by Dorothea. She was very pleased with all the things she got. She got a lot of money, all told.

Monday, April 13, 1981 Kim up for her birthday supper

A very nice sunny day except it was on the cold side. I did a very big wash. Bill up to Dorothea’s. Billie went to Norway, got some medicine for Heidi. Betty cleaned Kimmy’s room today. I cooked three fowl today, two for Betty’s folks, one for us. We had Kimmy up for her birthday supper. She enjoyed her supper very much. She is a nice girl.

Tuesday, April 14, 1981 astronauts back to earth

It was sunny when we got up but it soon began to cloud up. By noon it was black heavy clouds and the rain began coming down quite hard. Very cold and windy. Some snow mixed in with it. Bill home all day. He watched the TV and we both watched when the astronauts came down. A perfect flight (out of space) and a very good landing in the Edwards Air Force Base in the (blank) desert in California.
