The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 26 - March 1, 1980

Thursday, February 26, 1981

It was a very rainy day. I done up my regular work. Went to town. Bill home all day. I watched TV programs in PM. It seems odd to see all the bare fields around. It is very strange the last 2 winters we have had not much snow. The fields all bare after the snow we did have, melted. It may be we are in for a new trend of seasons.

Friday, February 27, 1981 Carmen got her drivers LICENSE

Today or this morning Carmen and Betty over to South Paris for Carmen to try to get her drivers license. She got it. She came home and then she took the car to school. We are all very pleased. I done a lot of house jobs, washed windows, etc. Also made four pies and a cake. Dorothea made phone calls for a car today.

Well it has been cloudy all day. I done up my regular work then did the changing of beds, swept, dusted, washed floors etc. Kim called also Betty, Walt, Betty and Zak. Carmen over to get her new haircut. She looked so pretty when she came home. Today David, Dorothea and Billie went down to Scarbrough to get David’s old car. Dorothea went and got her income tax papers fixed up. Also they looked at a car at Rowe Ford Company. I took my vacuum over to have cleaned up, the inside. Ilan and Bill hauled the fishing house off the lake.

I didn’t get up until 7:30. I got the breakfast done up. Then I worked at the desk all day. It was quite a windy day.
