The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 13 - 16, 1981 Carmen to Bangor

 

Tuesday, January 13, 1981

 

It was cloudy part of the day then it cleared off. Sunny all PM. I done the ironing early this morning. I done up the work. David called. It was zero this morning. It is cold all on the eastern coast into Florida. Zero and 6 and 8 above in places in Florida. Fruits have frozen. Billie never did hear from the Oxford Hills High job. Betty called, Tom called to get milk.

 

 

 

Wednesday, January 14, 1981

 

It turned out to be a nice day. Not too cold, about 15 to 18 above. I done up my work. Bill and Ilan up fishing. Billie over to the job service office at South Paris. Carmen called at supper time to get a few things. I cooked a chicken and made bread today.

 

 

 

Thursday, January 15, 1981

 

A very nice day, on the warmer side. About 8 to 10 above. I done up my work. Got ready and went to town with Betty, Dorothea and Delores. Susan went yesterday. We shopped for Fern. Bill and Ilan fishing all day. Carmen went down to Maureen’s tonight to stay, they are leaving early in the morning to go to Bangor where Maureen will take some college tests. Lisa Osgood went too. Billie busy all day. He went to New Hampshire, called at Fern’s.

 

 

 

Friday, January 16, 1981 Carmen up to Bangor and Orono today

 

Nice, sunny part the day then it clouded up and late tonight it snowed a little. Today Carmen went up to Bangor with Maureen to take some test, Maureen did. They got home about 7:30-8.
