The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 9 - 12, 1981

Friday, January 9, 1981 10 below this morning

 

It was cloudy all day. I got up early and did a dite of washing. Got ready to go to Portland with Dorothea. We change my dresses and Dorothea did a little shopping for Jeff in exchange for some Christmas things she got him that didn’t fit him. Betty, Joy, Cindy and Kim to the orthodontist than they did Carmen’s birthday shopping. I got home at 3:45 in time to see rest of General Hospital. Carmen up for supper.

 

 

 

Saturday, January 10, 1981

 

A quite nice day, cloudy and light snow flurries all forenoon, in PM it cleared. Not too cold, about 15 to 20 during the day. David here this morning. I cleaned up the house, made rolls and 2 pies. Washed floors. Took a bath. Billie and I called at Dorothea and David’s to see Neka. His leg is in a cast, poor critter. I feel so sorry for him. We’ll be glad when he is better. Carmen worked at shelter, called twice today. Laurie called in evening. The Grimes girls and friends are at Betty’s tonight.

 

 

 

Sunday, January 11, 1981

 

It was about 10 below this morning but it got warmed up a dite from the sun. A very nice sunny all day. Zak came up late last night to stay all night because they had company. He went home about 11. I washed all the windows. Cleaned up the stove etc. Was busy most all day. Bill and Billie in and out. Carmen and Kim called. Joy came after milk tonight. Bill and Ilan went fishing up to the Lake, they got the fish house moved on to the Lake.

 

 

 

Monday, January 12, 1981 20 below

 

When we got up it was 20 below at 5:30. I did a wash today. Bill and Billie out. Bill home most of the day. Joy called.
