The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 18 - 21, 1980

Sunday, May 18, 1980

 

This has been a cloudy day with heavy rain in PM. Didn’t get up until about 7:30. Got the breakfast, done up the work. Then I cleaned the upper cupboards all but the top shelf. I cleaned the cupboards by the kitchen. Billie went with Butch. Bill in and out. He mowed lawn down and worked on Joy’s truck. He and I called at Dorothea and Dave’s. Kim called for a while today, also Zak brought some flowers.

 

 

 

Monday, May 19, 1980

 

Not a very good day. I couldn’t wash my bedding so I cleaned the 2 bathrooms and done some other odd jobs. Bill up to Dorothea’s and down to the camp. Billie went with Bob Thomas. They started cleaning and painting at the shelter today.

 

 

 

Tuesday, May 20, 1980

 

Well the weather is getting better. I cleaned the 2 bedrooms today. I had to hurry, my feet bothered me a lot. Kim came up and helped get a lot done. I cooked a turkey for supper and Betty’s. It was good. Betty worked at the shelter. Dorothea came down in evening and took a bath in evening. Joy was here to get milk. I did heaps and heaps of washing, bedding etc.

 

 

 

Wednesday, May 21, 1980

 

A very nice day. I cleaned my living room. In forenoon went over to Norway with Billie. I got some new shade curtains. Also curtains for the kitchen. Came home, finished the living room. I put on the finishing touches late at night but I got it done. I got up early and ironed the bedroom curtains. Betty worked at the shelter.
