The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 8 - 11, 1980 Nanny's Birthday

Friday, August 8, 1980 a very hot and humid day, 70 years old today

I done a dite of wash. Done up regular work, defrosted refrigerator, got beans ready for supper. Fern and Es was up for all day. It was my 70th birthday. It won’t be long now. We talked etc. Betty and Kim called a minute.

A nice day, clear and the humidity is gone. It has been very windy all day. I done up my regular work, went down town. Came home, made bread and rolls, washed floors, took bath etc. Billie went away and got a big mess of blueberries. I picked them over and got them frozen. Carmen came in for a little while.

Sunday, August 10, 1980 a nice clear and cooler day a very nice birthday at Betty and Walt and children.

Got up not until about 7:30 AM. I put a rinse on my hair. I got breakfast and done up my work. Got ready and went down to Betty’s about noon. They had a very nice cookout and a beautiful cake and ice cream and I got many nice gifts and a cream separator. Fern, Es, Susan and children all were there. Betty’s family, Dorothea and David and us. It was always very nice on these birthday doings and it was nice today as usual.

I done my regular work and did the washing. Dried them in the dryer. A miserable dreary day. Bill up to Dorothea’s. I watched soaps in PM.
