The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 16 - 19, 1980

 

Wednesday, July 16, 1980 HOT

 

Another very hot day. I made 2 lemon pies, 3 mac & cheeses. I did a lot of other jobs. Dorothea called and Betty and the kids. I gave Dorothea a mac & cheese also Betty’s folks.

 

 

 

Thursday, July 17, 1980 HOT

 

Another very hot day, humidity is not so bad today. I done up my regular work, went to town. Came home, picked some peas, made some brownies. Watched shows on TV.

 

 

 

Friday, July 18, 1980

 

It has been a very pretty day. I done up my work, went to Windham and Bradlee’s and South Portland and mall with Betty and kids. She done Walt’s birthday shopping. I came home, changed, watched TV soaps, got supper. Dorothea called, she and I called at Fern’s. Billie been in and out all day. Bill up to Dorothea’s. Bill don’t feel very good. He got sick from the heat last week.

 

 

 

Saturday, July 19, 1980 Jersey Bull

 

Well it hasn’t been a clear day, but fair, some high clouds. Hazy. It has been very hot most of the day. I been very busy all day. I got up early, got the cake frosted, got breakfast, done the dishes. Changed the beds, swept, dusted, washed floors. Done some cooking. Shelled peas and froze them. Bill not feeling too good. Billie gone most of the day in and out. He bought a bull, about 8 months old. Bought him of Wade Kimball. The New Hope Farm had their bake sale and rummage. Did very well. Carmen and Laurie called. Kim and Zak called. Walt, Bettbad and Wolffs and Hortons kids all gone swimming up to Sweden. Also Freya and Tara. Dorothea called today.
