The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 20 - 23, 1980

Sunday, July 20, 1980 HAY Walt’s birthday, 52 years

A quite nice day, very hot and humid. I done my regular work, fixed the peas for the freezer. Today Billie got the hay. It isn’t very good hay. David helped. Betty, Carmen, Bill, Walt helped to unload and Zak. Betty brought me up some yellow string beans.

Monday, July 21, 1980 HUMID, ZAK GOT HIS BRAND-NEW MOTORBIKE, HOT

It was raining in morning. Billie didn’t do any outside work so he went down and asked Zak if he wanted to go for a ride. They went and Billie bought him a brand-new bike. He is a very happy boy tonight. He is so pleased, it is a Honda light red. He says “I love this Nanny”. I did my washing and dried them in the dryer. I wrote out my store list. We picked peas in evening and late in eve we had a very bad thundershower.

Tuesday, July 22, 1980 DOROTHEA’S KITCHEN PAPERED, HOT

Another one of those hot humid days. I got my work done up, went down to Betty’s. Kim and I made the double batch of root beer. Betty and Dawn up to Dorothea’s to help her paper her kitchen. I’m so glad she has that done. I came home, picked beans for supper than watched soaps. Showers again tonight, not as bad as last night. Very hot and humid. I ironed early this morning.

Wednesday, July 23, 1980 got new stove

Well it was raining when we got up. But it cleared and the humidity left. We picked things up from the gardens. I did a dite of washing. Zak loves his new bike. Today Betty and Walt up to Vermont to get a stove.
