The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

A quite nice day. I done up my regular work. Got ready went with Betty and Carmen and Fern, when looking for antiques. A gift for Dorothea in particular. They are having a housewarming for her August 16. Came home, Fern stayed here for supper and Betty’s folks came up to eat outside but it rained. Kimmy babysitting all day and this evening.

Sunday, August 3, 1980 FREYA DIED AT 12:30 tonight, bull went

Had showers in late PM. Also Billie and I went down to Cornish to look for a churn and separator. I done just regular work. Billie picked cukes. A man, Clyde Rowe, came and looked at the 2 bulls. After supper Freya came up through the field (for the last time). We didn’t know it at the time. She had a little snack as usual. She twisted around on the porch and then laid down and in a short time she went down off the porch. I expected her to go home, but she went underneath the porch. Finally laid down, groaned some same as she has before. Finally they called her home. She only went a short distance and laid down than another short distance and laid down again. Finally she made it home. About an hour Betty called and said she was dying. We couldn’t believe it. Her breathing very bad. Staggering when she got up. The whole family was with her. About 12:30 she cradled her head in Carmen’s lap and in a few moments she breathed her last. It was awful. The whole family lost a very dear pet. They all loved her and she loved them too. It came so sudden. She had been failing for about a year and much more so in the past 6 months. It was so shocking because we didn’t expect but what she would go for a longer time. We all loved her. She was always at home here as well as at her own home.
