The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 3 - 6, 1979

Thursday, May 3, 1979 $242.30 HOT DAY, $106.30

 

A very nice day. I did a wash. I did the windows, swept the house, made pies. I got ready and Bill took Delores and I to town. Came home, got a roast pork in, got the clothes in, did my hair, picked dandelions and cleaned them, got supper. Made a batch of cookies after supper. Billie went to see Allen Renfue down to Casco after supper but he want at home. Carmen brought her boyfriend home from school tonight. She and Betty went to Portland to get her a dress to wear to the dance. They took Larry home. The rooster got out.

 

 

 

Friday, May 4, 1979 got hair set

 

I got my hair set at Barbara’s then Joy, Betty, Joy and I went to Shaw’s in North Conway. Bill worked on the boat.

 

 

 

Saturday, May 5, 1979

 

It was a nice sunny day but cold and windy. I cooked. Betty and I went to Norway. I got some new curtains. Came home, made a cake, washed kitchen floor, baked my bread etc. Bill and Billie cleaned up the garage. Bill put some shelves up. It looks some better.

 

 

 

Sunday, May 6, 1979

 

A quite nice day. A little windy, not too cold. I washed, ironed, dusted etc. Bill worked on boat. Billie cleaned up outside. Went down to see Wesley. Busy he was all day.
