The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 18 - 21, 1979

 

Sunday, February 18, 1979

 

Well it has been a milder day during the day. No wind. It was a sunny day. I cooked a roast pork dinner for Betty’s birthday. Horton family, Fern and Dawn was the guests. They all enjoyed the day, and here for supper. I had a whip cream cake for the birthday cake. Also made a lemon sponge pie.

 

 

 

Monday, February 19, 1979 school vacation, 15 below this morning

 

Kind of a hazy day. Some sun too. I done my regular work. I did the wash. I have left them out tonight. Kim came up this PM. We worked on the puzzle. I watched TV programs. Bill down to Fern’s and fixed her furnace. It was quite cold again this morning. Today the school vacation started.

 

 

 

Tuesday, February 20, 1979

 

Walt’s bathroom pipes froze up this morning, they couldn’t use it tonight. I ironed, did a dite of washing.

 

 

 

Wednesday, February 21, 1979

 

Kind of a cloudy day. I done up my work. Betty and Kim gone to the dentist in Portland. She had the braces put on her lower teeth. Carmen and Laurie stayed here last night. Zak up here today and is staying all night. Bill down and helped Walt all day.
