The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 4 - 7, 1979 AFS Student Arrives

Wednesday, April 4, 1979

 

Well when we got up this morning it was all clear and the sun came up. A very nice day. It was so good to see that sun. It began clouding up in late PM to storm again. Snow is coming tonight they say. Well we went up to Shaw’s, Ames. Betty, Joy, Susan and me. Bill worked on the boat all day.

 

 

 

Thursday, April 5, 1979 the AFS student came today

 

Well what a day, a disgusting mess. When we got up about 3 inches of snow ,is still coming. Went to town and done the shopping. Betty took us. I came home, done up the work. Made cookies, washed floors. It turned out to be a sunny day and the cover of snow melted. Well, the AFS kids came, they had a supper at school for them, they got home about 10 PM. Kim and Zak to Portland to have their teeth checked. Also done Kimmy’s birthday shopping. Dorothea went with us. Got home early.

Friday, April 6, 1979

 

Well a fairly nice day. Not too warm. It is messy outside. I was busy. Went to town. I cleaned up the house, washed etc. Carmen and Jenny called after school. A party at John Keen’s tonight. Betty called me after they got home. It was quite a party.

 

 

 

Saturday, April 7, 1979

 

Well a partly cloudy day but sunny. It was very cold and windy. I did my regular work. Walt came up and put the new bike together. Billie over to Norway and around. Betty worked up to the shelter. Carmen and the AFS group all went to Portland and along the coast up to L.L. Bean. It was very cold but they had a good time. Tonight they went to a party at Danny Hayes’s. Joy and Betty called in PM.
